IAMSAR Manual

The IAMSAR Manual is jointly published by IMO and ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization).

The manual provides guidelines for a unified aviation and maritime approach to organizing and delivering search and rescue (SAR) services. Each volume can be used independently or together with the other two volumes for a comprehensive understanding of the SAR system.

The IAMSAR manual comes in three volumes:

  Volume I: Organization and Management – Explores the global search and rescue (SAR) system, including the establishment and enhancement of national and regional SAR frameworks. It also highlights cooperation with neighbouring states to ensure efficient and cost-effective SAR services.

  Volume II: Mission Coordination – Provides guidance for personnel involved in planning and coordinating SAR operations and exercises.

  Volume III: Mobile Facilities – Designed for use aboard rescue units, aircraft, and vessels, offering support for search and rescue operations, on-scene coordination, and managing SAR-related emergencies.
