International Code of Signals

Signal codes have been in use since the early 19th century to provide mariners with a universally recognized system for communication at sea. Each signal in the International Code of Signals conveys a specific meaning, ensuring that safety-related situations can be clearly communicated through various methods, even in the presence of language barriers.

Since the first edition was published in 1965, the Maritime Safety Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted amendments, leading to four subsequent editions. The fourth edition, released in 2005, incorporated all amendments up to MSC 73 in December 2000. No further amendments have been made since then, and this current edition includes only minor editorial updates and a new cover. As a result, both the 2005 edition and this edition remain equally valid.
